Why You Must Kill Your Old Self

Become A Greater Version Of Yourself

Killing Your Old Self

It wasn’t until now that I understood the importance and power of the concept of ‘killing your old self.’

To Become A Greater Version Of Yourself, You Must Kill Your ‘Old Self’

This obviously doesn’t mean to actually kill yourself or kill someone else, but to create a new identity by destroying what remains of your old identity.

For example,

If you want to quit watching porn, you have to destroy that part of you that still watches porn.

You need to stop seeing yourself as someone who watches porn.

Someone who watches porn is usually someone who is very active on the internet.

It’s usually someone who plays a lot of video games, scrolls on social media, has a shitty social life, and has a lot of issues like anxiety and depression.

The point is, this person sees themselves as a loser and because he believes he’s a loser, he will continue to act like a loser.

How do I know this?

Because that was me.

And how I happened to kill my old self was to stop being so active on the internet, stop playing video games, stop scrolling on social media, and actually go out and talk to people.

Eventually, through taking action I was able to provide proof for myself that I was now different.

It wasn’t easy, but I was able to replace these old habits with new habits, and thus I created a new identity for myself.

Killing your old self, therefore, is a matter of replacing your old habits with the new habits of your desired identity (your future self), and using this as proof of your ability to change.

We can do this simply by creating a habit tracker and writing down our desired habits of our desired self.

This can be like going to the gym, running, eating clean, eating less sugar, no caffeine, and going on walks etc.

However, there is another way to go even deeper with this, which you can use in combination with replacing old habits…

Re-Wiring The Brain Towards Your Desired Identity

We can re-wire our brain and identity through our self-talk and imagination.

This is also known as affirmations and visualisations.

I know you might be thinking this is all “wee-woo” black-magic type shit and trust me I thought so too after trying it for a while and never really seeing results but I was probably doing it wrong.

It wasn’t until these past few weeks after adding this back to my habit tracker, and intentionally giving myself positive self-talk that was actually BELIEVABLE and not too out there, I have been experiencing an improvement in my self-image.

Understanding the self-image is extremely important for achieving your desired goals and identity.

According to Maxwell Maltz in his book Psycho-Cybernetics, he says:

  • The self-image is our conception of the “sort of person I am”

  • Our self-image has been built up from our beliefs about ourselves

  • Most of these beliefs have been formed unconsciously from past experiences, from people, and most are formed especially during early childhood

  • Once a belief about ourselves gets into our self-image or our mental “picture of self,” we don’t question its validity, but act upon it as if it’s true.

For example,

Someone who believes they’ll never succeed at quitting porn, will in fact never quit porn.

I’m not saying you it’s as easy as just saying “I’ll never watch porn again” and then you actually never watch it again.

It doesn’t work like that, and the reason it doesn’t is because you need to actually believe it.

Through gradual affirmations and visualisations that you can believe in, you are essentially re-wiring your brain into making them a reality, one step at a time.

That belief alone is enough to change your entire life.

This works because the nervous system doesn’t know the difference between imagination and reality.

Whenever you think of a hot girl, you tend to get an erection (if you’re male).

The same is true when you imagine your future self so vividly, that you start to believe you are this future self because you now have proof of it (from imagining it).

I know it sounds silly and all, these are very powerful tools to achieve your goals, and is what many hardworking entrepreneurs use to achieve anything they want in life.

Sam Ovens’ Alchemy of Self

Sam Ovens is a self-made multi-millionaire entrepreneur who improves his self-image through visualisations and affirmations.

Sam Ovens has created his own self-talk and imagery tool in his ‘Alchemy of Self’ which is included in purchasing his ‘Consulting Accelerator’ course.

I’m not telling you to buy his course or any of his products and services… yet.

But you can acquire this ‘Alchemy of Self’ like I have very easily…

The Alchemy of Self goes very in-depth into what Sam does for his affirmations and visualisations and the type of person he wants to become.

It provides a guideline for how we should structure our own affirmations and visualisations.

I’m going to be spending some time using the Alchemy of Self myself so stay tuned if you want to see my results!

Cleaning Up Your Wardrobe

Another effective way to kill your old self is to get rid of everything that reminds you of the person you used to be.

After you make some significant progress in life, you tend to look back.

Most times you probably just cringe at how much of a loser or idiot you were back then, because I do.

But when you do this, do it intentionally and look back at what your old self was doing at the time.

  • Was he wearing some old worn-out clothes that made him feel inferior?

  • Was he being influenced by his friends to play games?

  • Was he being lazy and scrolling on social media?

  • Was he spending a lot of time on the internet?

  • Was his hair long, unkept and messy?

If you’re worried about spending a fortune, you don’t have to.

Find sales like Black Friday or Boxing Day to help you achieve your desired self.

The clothes I got were casual and gym clothes I got online from Echt, an Austrailan brand (they still have an ongoing sale at the time of writing this).

By getting a new set of clothes, getting a new haircut, and replacing my old worn-out runners, I was able to create a new identity for myself.

My self-esteem was elevated and my self-image changed.

Another thing I did was that after years of training at my old gym, I had moved to a new gym that was way nicer and much bigger.

It had tons of new equipment, pilates classes included, nice toilets and change-rooms and even a sauna and a cold plunge.

Even the people there different, and some of them were influencers!

As a result, I experienced a further increase in self-esteem and I felt like a totally different person.

By simply changing my set of clothes and changing my environment, I was able to kill my old self, and inspire a new and improved identity.

The person who goes to a good gym, has clothes and shoes that match their style, is outgoing, hardworking, and purposeful, feels good about themselves, thus is much less likely to cope with negative behaviours.

Though I’ve made significant progress, there is still a long way to go.

I’m still trying to become my future self.

Be bold, feel good about yourself, and become the person you always wanted to be.

Hope that inspired you bro.

Laters,

Henry
